On Quality

Finishing Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and what stayed with me: the idea of Quality, impatience, and staying with things longer than you'd like.

Finished Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and then On Quality.

I didn’t expect much from it. The “spiritual” angle usually doesn’t resonate with me.

But the idea of Quality stayed with me.

It’s not really new. More like something I already had in the background, just clearer now.

That difference between things that just work and things that are done properly. Hard to define, but obvious when you see it.

I’ve been thinking about how often impatience gets in the way.

Wanting things to move faster than they should. Skipping steps because the outcome is already clear. Getting a bit restless when progress is slow or invisible.

But I’m starting to think that’s exactly where things are actually built.

Repetition, boredom, going over the same thing again. Staying with something longer than you’d like.

And it’s not just work.

It’s the same in training, in how you build things, in how you deal with people. Even in how you think about something properly instead of jumping to conclusions.

Also this: understanding what’s under the hood.

It’s easier than ever to get something working without really knowing how it works. You can stitch things together and from the outside it looks fine.

But it’s not the same.

There’s a difference between using something and really understanding it. Knowing where it might break, what happens under pressure.

Otherwise you’re just along for the ride.

Maybe it’s the same pattern again. Wanting the result without the depth behind it.

Lately I’m trying to stay with things a bit longer. Not rush through them. Just do them properly.
